Good Health Starts with Good Gut Health

How to manage your health with a balanced diet and regular intestinal check-ups at Humansa

Hong Kong is home to some of the world’s best restaurants and offers incredible food in every corner. But with busy lifestyles and hectic schedules, we’re often skipping meals and when we do eat, it’s irregular or we’re overindulging and addicted to fast foods. All of this can have an adverse effect on your gut and in turn, your health.

The gut is a complex system that has a big impact on your overall health. It can contribute to a strong immune system, healthy heart and brain, good sleep and digestion, and can even affect your mood and wellbeing. Often referred to as the "second brain" by doctors, the intestines rely on similar neurons and neurotransmitters that can affect emotions. Yes, a balanced intestinal microbiota can make you feel good and happy!

A balanced diet, with more fresh fruits and vegetables, fermented foods, probiotics, and less processed foods, especially on an empty stomach which can irritate the stomach or cause indigestion, is therefore recommended.

Five Foods to Avoid on an Empty Stomach:

Cheese & Tomato

Cheese: Eating fermented dairy products on an empty stomach produces hydrochloric acid which kills lactic acid bacteria and leads to acidity. Those with gastric ulcers and hyperacidity should avoid this.

Tomato: Rich in soluble astringents such as pectin, which interact with stomach acid and coagulate, this fruit can cause uncomfortable bloating and pain.

Banana & Orange

Banana: High-potassium foods are helpful for bowel motility but if you eat it on an empty stomach, there is no digestible food and it can therefore cause damage to the intestines and stomach.

Orange: Not only can citrus increase acid production, but it also contains tough fibres and excess fructose that can slow down your digestive system when eaten on an empty stomach.

Sweet Potato

Sweet potato: The tannins and gums in this root vegetable can stimulate gastric acid secretion and cause burning and discomfort in the stomach.

Regular check-ups, particularly if you are aged 50 and over, are important to assess your current gut health. Humansa HD Endoscopy Centre in Central provides professional consultations as well as packages for colonoscopy (starts from HK$9,800) and gastroscopy (starts from HK$7,800).
