Breast cancer is one of the five deadliest cancers in the world now. Routine health check-up helps to identify any early signs of potential problems before they become risk factors.

• How often? Once a month. The week after your period would be the best time, as the effect of your period on your breast should have weaned off by then.
• Things to pay attention to: Asymmetry in the breast, abnormal skin changes, any nipple that has turned inward, any lumps or masses, and abnormal veins.
• How to check? Use the flat part of your fingers to press gently into your breast to feel for any lumps, starting from outside and working inward, or in a spiral pattern to make sure you cover the entire breast. Press your nipples softly and see if there is any secretion. If you find any signs of an abnormality, consult your doctor as soon as possible.

Besides self-breast exam, it is important to have a regular breast examination conducted by doctor and mammography screening. If you're at high risk because of a strong family history of breast cancer, a yearly breast exam by your doctor may needed. Generally, women should also do monthly self-exams starting from the age of 20, and suggest to have an examination by doctor once every three years. Starting from age of 40, you are suggested to have an examination by doctor and mammogram screening once every two years.
