Cast bronze, clay and tatami mats

‘Afro-Ikebana’ is made up of Japanese tatami mats, a large glazed clay vessel and a bronze wall sculpture. The bronze sculpture is a cast of an African mask of unknown origin. The title of this work is a hybridization of the words “Ikebana”, which is the art of Japanese floral arrangement, and “Afro”, which relates to the which refers to both African-American culture and the iconic hairstyle, which was a potent symbol of Black Power during the post-civil rights movement. In combining the African sculpture, which riffs on tribal reliquaries, with the Japanese tatami mats and branch, Gates creates a new visual language that marries these two distinct cultural narratives.
